Kastellet

Unlike some of the other parks that are built on Copenhagen's old defences, this is Copenhagen's old defences. This old star-shaped fortification is well-preserved and still houses a functioning military base. Not that you can tell – people have picnics here. Nice view of the harbour up on the eastern ramparts.

A bite to eat in/near Kastellet

BBQing is not allowed on the ramparts, only the area outside the moat. Here you will find permanent BBQs as well as benches and a playground.

There is an Irma supermarket at Østerport Station, Oslo Plads (west).

At Nordre Toldbod (southeast) you will find Løgismose, a luxury food business which produces, imports and sells only the very best produce from Denmark and abroad. Especially the cheese, wine and chocolate is to die for.

This tiny park is squeezed in between mighty Christiansborg (housing our Parliament) and the Royal Library on the island of Slotsholmen. It’s very peaceful and quiet (and let’s keep it that way, people), and a favoured spot for those studying for their exams this time of year. Right now the 'beauty bush' is in full bloom, so have a seat under the pink cloud and enjoy whatever you brought.

Free entrance. Note: only ducks are allowed to swim in the fountain…

A bite to eat in/near Bibliotekshaven

Søren K – fabulous view, good cuisine. Situated on the very edge of the harbour, inside Den Sorte Diamant (the Black Diamond), the extension to the Royal Library. Dishes from DKK 75 for lunch, from DKK 95 for dinner. Book a table in advance, the 'Bib Gourmand' mention in the Michelin guide means the place can be quite busy.

Toldboden restaurant

Toldboden is located at Nordre Toldbod with a great view of the harbour.

The building doesn't look like much on the outside, but the room inside is light and airy. The location right by the water means that the place is particularly charming during daylight hours when sky and sea both light up the room.

If it's sunny, find a table outside and watch the lively harbour traffic. You might see the royal yacht Dannebrog anchored there, as Nordre Toldbod is where the royal family embarks/disembarks the ship.
The restaurant is climate friendly. When the building was restored, a lot of thought went into making it energy efficient. You will notice that the lights in the bathroom only turn on when you enter and the furniture is made from reused materials. The kitchen uses local produce of the highest quality.

The brunch menu offered on weekends is not the cheapest in town (DKK 198), but comprehensive and appetising: Sausages, eggs, ham, cheeses, vegetable pie, spareribs, traditional Danish liver paté, fish cakes, salad, seafood salad,  whole grain salad, yoghurt with syrup and muesli, freshly baked bread, cake and pastries, homemade jam, coffee, tea, smoothies and juice.

Toldboden "Havnegrill" serves fresh-made Danish seafood every day of the week at prices from DKK 50.

Toldboden also has a small ice cream shop just on the corner of the building.

Ofelia restaurant

Ofelia is located in the foyer of Skuespilhuset, the Royal Danish Playhouse, part of the Royal Theatre.

It has a nice view over the harbour and is very thought-through – even the lamps that hang from the ceiling are designed to avoid the light reflecting in the windows; that way the guests can enjoy the view better at night. The restaurant faces east, so you can enjoy your brunch (and free WiFi) in the sun.

You are allowed to bring your own food here(!), just pick one of the tables at the far end of the room and not the tables with the crisp white tablecloths. Even whole kindergartens stop by here to enjoy their lunch packs.

The cuisine is French/Danish. 2 courses for DKK 259, 3 courses for DKK 299.
