Magstræde 16

The name of the restaurant is its address; Magstræde 16. The cuisine is Italian – the simple, authentic and quality-conscious kind of Italian. Only the best products are served here, most of them hand-picked and specially imported by the owners (don't even get them started on the wine...). And it is even very affordable with prices starting well below DKK 100. Everything here is charmingly old and crooked – the street, the building, the floors. What's not to love?

This place is all about the litte pizze which the restaurant is understandably famous for. In addition to the set menu, there are the season dependent "signature pizze" of talented chefs who have visited the kitchen of Magstræde 16. The pizze are small because the restaurant aims for a tapas-style experience, this way 2 people can share 3 different mouth-watering pizze.

This place is a personal favourite of mine because it is extraordinary value for money, the best Italian food I have enjoyed outside Tuscany, and the staff are very friendly and enthusiastic. I had my graduation party here and my family was floored.

Sct Peders Bageri

The specialty at Sct Peders Bageri is the "onsdagssnegl"; Wednesday cinnamon roll. It's about as big as your face, comes sugar-dusted or with icing, and costs DKK 12. They sell around 4,000 of them every Wednesday.

In addition to this little mid-week snack, the bakery of course sells various types of bread and cake, sandwiches around lunch time (they'll be happy to warm them for you if you like your brie melted), and a small selection of drinks. A good place to enjoy an affordable breakfast before exploring Latinerkvarteret.

29 Sankt Peders Stræde, København K
Open: Mon-Fri 7-17:30, Sat 7-16.

Soupanatural offers a healthy, organic and tasty selection of soup and porridge - to stay (where you can enjoy the free WiFi) or to go. 250 ml for DKK 35, 400 ml for DKK 45.

Scarpetta

At Scarpetta, the concept is plenty of cheap starter-sized dishes – you can pick as few or as many as you are in the mood for, a menu of 5 dishes is DKK 275. The quality is good and consistent, the cuisine honest and simple Italian.

7 Rantzausgade, 2200 København N
Tel.: 3535 0808
Open: Mon-Sun 17:30-24 (the kitchen closes at 21:30, on Sunday at 21)

Copenhagen on a budget

I was reminded recently how expensive this place is. I mean, I know it is. Scandinavia in general is one of the most expensive corners of the world. But living here, one gets used to it and sometimes I forget how harrowing prices must seem to those who visit.

Eating well does not necessarily require you to spend a fortune on every meal you have. There are several places where you can enjoy a good evening meal for around DKK 100. Similarly, lingering over an elaborate brunch is great if you have the time and the money, but not what you are looking for every day. For a simple and affordable breakfast, skip the cafes and try the bakeries or the coffee shops instead.

Check the posts labelled "Food - Budget".

Taste

Right around the corner from Marmorkirken, you will find Taste. A very ambitious French shop/cafe, comprising both patisserie, boulangerie, sandwicherie and confiturier - everything is homemade; the bread, the soup, the cakes, even the pickles in your quite reasonably priced sandwich (DKK 55 as takeaway, 78 to stay).

Outdoor serving in summer, cushioned leather furniture inside where you can enjoy a cup of Valhrona chocolate or afternoon tea with a madeleine or sablé.

Madklubben restaurants

Madklubben is a favourite of mine! The concept is simple in the best sense of the word.

As the manifest says: Good food in nice surroundings, no long stories and intimate details about everything they serve, but do ask if you have questions - and speak up if something doesn't live up to your expectations; tomorrow it will be too late to correct it.

Very reasonable prices: 1 course for DKK 100, 2 for DKK 150, 3 for DKK 200, 4 for DKK 250. And the Danish/French-inspired cuisine is really good.

They are only open for dinner.

This is a personal favourite of mine because it is great value for money, and I always leave with a big smile on my face after having enjoyed a delicious dinner.

A peek in through the window

Madklubben has other eateries around Copenhagen – lucky us!

The most recent addition is Madklubben TIVOLI in the Tivoli Gardens. The restaurant looks like an old conservatory and the menu is based on “dishes granny would serve in her allotment garden”. Small lunch dishes for DKK 50 (they recommend 3 dishes per person). Dinner is 1 course for DKK 100, 2 for DKK 150, 3 for DKK 200, 4 for DKK 250, similar to the original Madklubben.

The restaurant is located right next to Plænen (“the lawn”) in Tivoli where guests can enjoy free open air concerts on Friday evenings – Madklubben TIVOLI therefore has a special Friday menu with 3 courses for DKK 350.
