Kastellet

Unlike some of the other parks that are built on Copenhagen's old defences, this is Copenhagen's old defences. This old star-shaped fortification is well-preserved and still houses a functioning military base. Not that you can tell – people have picnics here. Nice view of the harbour up on the eastern ramparts.

Free entrance. Public toilets. Playground. Note: No swimming in the moat.

A bite to eat in/near Kastellet

BBQing is not allowed on the ramparts, only the area outside the moat. Here you will find permanent BBQs as well as benches and a playground.

There is an Irma supermarket at Østerport Station, Oslo Plads (west).

At Nordre Toldbod (southeast) you will find Løgismose, a luxury food business which produces, imports and sells only the very best produce from Denmark and abroad. Especially the cheese, wine and chocolate is to die for.

Julian

Restaurant Julian is located inside the National Museum (free admission) and is a very popular spot for weekend brunch. The famed brunch buffet is comprehensive - and somewhat costly: DKK 195.

Like its sister restaurant Toldboden, it is climate friendly and serves local produce of the highest quality. On weekdays Julian is open for lunch and offers interesting dishes such as "prehistoric ox" and a good selection of fish.

Nationalmuseet

The National Museum. Plenty to see and do!

Permanent exhibitions include Danish prehistory, middle ages and renaissance. The children's museum is more like a playground with viking ships and medieval castles.

You are welcome to bring your own food and eat in the museum's dining room, or eat at the popular Restaurant Julian which is famed for its excellent climate-friendly weekend brunch (do book a table in advance!). Julian also sells lunch packs to go.

The museum has a giftshop, but if you have a special interest in prehistory jewellery I would recommend a visit to Museums Kopi Smykker in Grønnegade.

Note! Free admission - however, you are not permitted to bring large rucksacks and if you want to leave your rucksack or coat in the wardrobe you will need a 10 kroner coin to use a locker. Free guided tours in English at 11 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays in June, July, August, September. Photography permitted.
